Election Committee Formed
Every year, half the board is up for election. Not only do we
need people to serve as board members, we need folks to serve
on the Election Committee. This committee vets the candidates
for office, supervises the ballot box on election night, and
counts the ballots at the end of the election. The committee
member volunteers are:
- Jeannene Wood, Chair
- Henry Burczak
- Joel Bennett
Offices Up For Election
The election date this year is June 24, and the positions open
are President, Secretary, and Publicity Officer. To serve as a
board member, you must be a member in good standing for one
year prior to the nomination period. The term of office is two
years, and board meetings are generally held once a month,
before the dance on Saturdays. For a complete description of
each board position, see Article Three of our
By
Laws.
No Dance May 27!
Just a friendly reminder that there will be no ABD dance on
Saturday, May 27, 2006. If you are looking for a replacement
dance event, our friend, Tina Davis is hosting her monthly
Back Room Dance at the Footworks studio (501 West 3rd Street-Corner
of West 3rd and San Antonio).
See her website Sweet T
Productions for more details. Tina is president of our affiliate,
the Austin Swing
Syndicate, and hosts the Back Room as a personal venture.
Lessons are offered at 8 pm, with social dancing from 9-Midnight.
Admission is $10 for the lesson and dance, or $5 for the dance only.
Annual Membership Meeting
Each year, ABD hosts an Annual Membership Meeting for all of our
members. It's a chance for the membership to bring ideas, suggest
activities, and submit questions to the board. Join us for this
open dialog with any thoughts you have about how ABD is doing. The
meeting will be held at 7:00 pm at ARC, the same night as the
election, June 24, 2006.
Free Classes before Dances
A lot of people are taking advantage of our free Mini-Lessons,
and many are even coming back for full classes at Hancock during
the week! If you know folks who hesitate to take the full class,
why not suggest that they take the sampler Mini-Lessons offered
before our dances? Word of mouth is a powerful advertising tool,
so tell everybody you know about our Mini-Lessons! No partners
are required for lessons or dances.
Volunteer Opportunities
ABD needs help at the check-in desk on Saturday nights. In exchange
for manning the desk for 30 minutes, you'll get an extra stamp on
your Frequent Dancer Card! Check-in duties include taking admission,
stamping cards, selling water, and checking off members in the sign
in book. This is a great way to meet people, put names to the faces
you recognize, and earn a free dance just a little bit faster!
Contact Tom Baylor at any of our Saturday Dances, or let a board
member know that you are interested in volunteering.
Mid-Year Workshops
Don't forget, Richard goes on vacation the week of June 1, so we
take a week off our regular class schedule. Don takes this time
to offer workshops, so check the ABD home page for more information.
We'll post his workshop schedule as soon as it's finalized!
Looking Ahead
Over the past two years, ABD has celebrated Armed Forces Day with
a live band. This year, the schedule didn't work out for May 20,
so we decided to go for Independence Day instead! Mark your
calendars now, because on July 1, 2006, we're bringing back the
Sentimental Journey Orchestra for an evening of big band delights.
Admission is $7 for students, affiliates, and members, $10 for
visitors.
