Laura LeKander – Tuesdays

Laura found her way to Ballroom Dancing via Tai Kwon Do. It was a kick to the ribs in a sparring exercise that convinced her to seek a less painful and more elegant way to express her desire for meaningful movement. After a career as a psychotherapist, she reports that her “second life” as a dance instructor easily rivals the fulfillment she experienced in the therapeutic setting.

After exploring training in the American Smooth and Rhythm dances, and experiences as an amateur competitor, Laura was compelled to make a shift to teaching. She began training in earnest, instructing group classes and private lessons, and enjoying NDCA Pro/Am competitions with her students. She expanded her desire to learn by training in the range of Country Western dances, and now enjoys them almost as much as Ballroom, her first love.

“I focus on creating a professional and creatively supportive environment for my students. It’s important to understand how students approach making dance a part of their lives. it can be a fun, exciting and nurturing experience, all at once!”

She is happy to be a part of the ABD family, and looks forward to the excitement of sharing the journey of discovery with her students. She is available for private lessons in Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Country Western, Salsa and Wedding First Dance. Check out her Facebook page, Dance With Laura.

Jessica Chaney – Thursdays
Jessica has been teaching dance for 13 years and has a strong belief that its never too late to learn to dance, and that ANYONE can learn how. She started her training in Tulsa, OK at the age of 20, and then at age 23, took a risk and moved to Long Beach California was hired on-the-spot at Arthur Murray Dance Studios. She ended up winning top teacher for 3 consecutive years.

She then moved back to her beloved ‘second home’, here in Austin in 2010 and has made it her home since then. She specializes in teaching the Bronze level in all varieties of dance. She has studied: Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Cha Cha, Swing (from both Coasts), Salsa, Mambo, Samba, Merengue, Bachata, Country Dances, Quickstep and even a little Peabody! She enjoys teaching any level of student, with a particular passion for helping new students fall in love with dance. Jessica believes in making the art quick, easy, and fun to learn. Then by balancing the fun with well-broken-down technique and a dash of theory, she hopes to help students feel cool, comfortable and confident in any social dance environment. We all want repeat dances with those we are brave enough to ask, don’t we? She feels privileged and honored to have been asked to teach the Austin Ballroom Dancers.
